Piyong Khamti Gram Panchayat under CD Block of Namsai district is approximately ten kilometers from the district headquarters. The Gram Panchayat required a source for micro irrigation that would enhance the distribution and efficiency of water from a nearby natural water reservoir for the paddy and other crops for increased yields.
Paddy is the staple crop for Piyong Khamti Gram Panchayat and cultivation is completely rain-fed. Even though a natural water reservoir is available near the Gram Panchayat, the villagers were not able to utilize it to irrigate their crops and increase yields. Under MGNRES, they demanded construction of an irrigation canal from the natural water reservoir till Piyong Khamti Gram Panchayat to increase water available for paddy in the cultivating season. The total length of the approved canal is 1.5 km.
The micro-irrigation structure in the form of irrigation canal ensured abundant supply of water for the paddy crops and enabled the farmers in the Gram Panchayat to increase crop yield. This increase has made available crops for sale further augmenting incomes.
